One of the unique advantages of a smail safari camp is that the activities can be tailored to your specific needs. For example, if the guides hear lion roaring close to camp at night, they will often knock on your chalet door to ask if you’d like to go and find them by vehicle with spotlights. Apart from combined vehicle and walking safaris, if guests only want to do game drives, this can be arranged.
A typical day on the kKaserie Trail begins with a mug of steaming coffee or tea and traditional homemade rusks, after which guests set off on their morning walk, following rhino tracks and elephant paths. the length of the walks depends on the interest and fitness of the guests. Returning to camp, enjoy a leisurely brunch and relax in the cool shade of the acacia trees, keeping an eye on the waterhole for the breeding herds of elephant that frequently come to drink. Following high tea in the cooler hours of the afternoon, set out for a game drive, stopping to indulge in a sunset cocktail, before returning to camp for an open-air dinner under the starry African night sky.
Each walking safari begins with a comprehensive briefing on how to behave when encountering animals on foot. All walks are led by qualified trails guides who have had intensive specialised training in approaching dangerous game. in addition to allowing you to view the larger animals on foot, the guides will give you an insight to the ways of the bush that will fascinate you. They will explain the animal tracks showing what animals passed through during the night, in addition to the intricate sophistication of termite mound communities and other interesting facets of the bush that go unnoticed on game drives. The change to walk amongst wildlife allows you to fully immerse yourself in the African smells and sounds. The main aim of a Kruger walking safari is to help you appreciate the nature around you, and to provide you with detailed explanation of spoor (tracks), vegetation and ecology in general – an unmatched wildlife experience that you will remember lifelong.
The Klaserie Trail has five chalets and a tree house where the more adventurous guests can sleep under the stars. the camp facilities include a main area housing a comfortable lounge area with two sitting areas and a library. the dining room has a large table where, true to safari tradition, everyone dines together to enjoy one another’s company and share stories of the day’s adventures.
There is also an outdoor boma area with campfire, perfect for walming you up with your coffee before morning walks, or for enjoying evening drinks around the flickering flames and woodsmoke scent of the bush. this is also where guests will experience a traditional African braai (barbecue) of sizzling steaks over glowing coals.
The Kruger lowveld can be very hot in summer and thankfully the camp has a beautiful pool with decking area where one can relax and siesta during the midday heat between safari activities.
To truly immerse yourself in the rustic bush experience, all chalets are equipped with lanterns, whilst plug-in points in the main area can be used to charge your camera batteries.
