MACHAMPANE Trail Area
Bordering on the north-eastern boundary Kruger National Park between the Limpopo and Olifants Rivers, with the mighty Shingwedzi flowing through its heart, the old Coutada 16 Hunting Area of Mozambique now forms the Parque Nacional do Limpopo.
Populated with a wide range of wildlife and boasting breathtaking scenery, this awe-inspiring adventure destination is accessible from South Africa through border posts in Kruger located at Giriyondo, north of Letaba Rest Camp, and Pafuri in the north-east at Crook’s Corner. Access from Mozambique is via Massingir Dam in the south, or Mapai in the east.
Luxury Tented Camp Walks
Guided wilderness walks are a feature at an intimate 10-bed en-suite luxury tented camp that overlooks the Machampane River, nestled in a secluded forest where bird and wildlife abound. Guests set out on foot on early morning and late afternoon game walks to take in the waterholes in this pristine wilderness area, covering some 6 – 8km per day. The walks last 3-4 hours, depending on the interest of the guests, and cover the area around Machampane. This includes both the riverine areas around the machampane and Palarangala Rivers, as well as the sandveld of the Lebombos.
In the evenings, replete from a three-course ‘bush cuisine’ dinner with its Mozambican flavours, the fire in the boma beckons, where you reminisce under a star-filled sky and the sounds of the African bush.
Children under 12 are welcome, but must be 12 or older to go on walks. One child under 12 years can be accommodated in a tent sharing with two adults. Adults or children over 12 sharing with two adults will be charged the full rate.
Access to the camp is via the Giriyondo Border Post in Kruger National Park into Mozambique. The border post is open daily from 08:00 – 16:00 and in winter time from 08:00 – 15:00. From the border it is about 1 hour’s drive to the camp. The road can be managed in a normal sedan, however a vehicle with high clearance is recommended.
